I would just try to be good friends for now. It sounds like you get along, but that doesn't necessarily mean that you are gf and bf material. Unless you ask him straight out you may never know, and that could obviously cause problems in the friendship side of things and awkwardness. If he's flitted from liking you to not liking you it sounds like he's not sure, so I wouldn't push the issue or think about it too heavily. Just relax and be friends for now.
