How do I clear this suspicion that I'm doing something wrong?

stand closer to the bonfire so you get the smoke smell on your clothes. Or better still burn some of the edges of your cuffs or your shirt hem; then you will get scolded for standing too close instead of being called a liar. hope this helps.
